Wikipedia quotes a very vivid recollection of the People's Artist Isaak Brodsky by Korney Chukovsky, who met him in 1926 to talk about his teacher Ilya Repin: “…Ah, how sumptuously he lives — and how tediously! Already in the hall hang portraits and little portraits of Lenin, fabricated by him at various prices, and in the dining room — which also serves him as a studio — there is nowhere to turn for the ‘Shooting of the Communists in Baku’... And the most dreadful thing is that he has several dozen such pictures. There, on the easels, stand canvases, and some daubers quickly and deftly make copies of this picture, while Brodsky touches up these copies a little and puts his own name to them. He has been commissioned for 60 identical ‘shootings’ for clubs, village soviets and so on, and he paints these pictures with other people's hands, signs them with his own name and lives in clover. All the ‘shootings’ are in black frames. In my presence one of the copyists received 20 chervontsy from him for five ‘shootings’. He had asked for 25 chervontsy.

Brodsky himself is very charming. …in order to buy pictures (he has an excellent collection of Vrubel, Malyavin, Yury Repin and others), to live comfortably and sumptuously, he has to make ‘shootings’ and fabricate Lenin, Lenin, Lenin. Here again is the philistine who, defending his right to a philistine life, covers himself with a psychology alien to him…

…I remembered that slender, elegant young artist who, too, once had his own inimitable music — in his portraits, in his decorative panels. His talent has left him, together with the slim waist and the pale complexion.”
