Police and firefighters broke down the door of the Access Gallery to rescue a man whose legs stuck out from behind a counter and were visible through the window. But there was no one to save: the guardians of public order found a sculpture by the artist Alyssa Pierre, *Untitled (the preparator)*, which portrays the figure of a gallery preparator leaning head-first into a packing crate.

What is more, the gallery's director relates that a friend of the artist, who lives across the street, came running to explain to the police that this was not a body but a work of art, and that nobody believed her.

It is not quite the anecdote of the contest between Zeuxis and Parrhasius in Pliny the Elder, in which one painter depicted grapes so convincingly that birds flew down to peck at the canvas, while the other painted a curtain so lifelike that his rival asked him to draw it aside and reveal the picture. But it is amusing that the police turned out to have a rather sober view of what might be called art.
