At university, in philosophy classes, I positively loathed Rousseau and metaphysics in general, considering it meaningless chatter that stole time from proper authors like Kuhn and Popper. But, all things considered, Jean-Jacques is a rather agreeable fellow. Especially in the guise of a citizen of Geneva in this portrait by Quentin de La Tour, shown at the Salon of 1753\. The original of this work is considered lost; it has come down to us in several copies by the artist's own hand, and this one, from the Antoine Lécuyer Museum of Fine Arts in Saint-Quentin, comes from de La Tour's workshop
