A well-preserved papal bulla, a fourteenth-century lead seal belonging to Pope Clement V, has been found during excavations in the centre of Tallinn. The find was made in a medieval cultural layer together with pottery and other artefacts. The archaeologist Mihkel Tammet believes that the seal may have arrived on the site by chance, along with the rubbish and soil that were carted out of the Old Town to fertilise fields and kitchen gardens. According to the historian Ivar Leimus, before this discovery only three papal bullae were known in Estonia, and all of them are kept with the documents in the Tallinn City Archives
