Court Reopens 2017 Case in Which More Than 20 Stolen Works of Art, Including Seven by Picasso, Were Seized from a House in a Suburb of Nice.

The police officers acted undercover, passing themselves off as a Swiss buyer and his assistant. The operation was prompted by information received from Belgium that stolen works of art were circulating in the region. The officers arranged a meeting at a hotel in Nice, where the seller proposed a deal to be settled in cash, for a sum of several million euros, and then drove them to a house in the commune of Peillon, north of the city.

In Peillon they found a kind of exhibition of stolen art. Among the works identified were the Picasso paintings "The Old King" and Le clown.

The current hearings have brought the results of the investigation together in a single trial of ten defendants. The prosecution maintains that they took part in the activities of a wider network of art thefts and sales operating in the region. The verdict is expected on 19 January and should shed light on the real scale of the thefts, as well as on the routes by which the works of art passed before they were intercepted by the police.
