In Soviet times the coat of arms of the USSR was raised on the dome of the tower of the Nizhny Novgorod office of the State Bank, while all the imperial decor connected with the 300th anniversary of the House of Romanov, which richly adorned the whole building, including the reliefs with the coat of arms on the main façade, was left in place. So the State Bank building has stood to this day, crowned with the emblem of the Soviet Union atop a base of lavish imperial ornament, with crowns, crosses and Russian folk motifs. Then one more detail was added: the Russian tricolour. Such is the continuity of three eras of Russian history, illustrated by a building of astonishing beauty, opened in 1913 and timed to the 50th anniversary of the State Bank and the 300th anniversary of the ruling dynasty. The interior decoration and architectural solutions impress no less: consider only the vault paintings after designs by Bilibin, or the 300-metre banking hall beneath a magnificently painted ceiling 13 metres high. And in time for the 800th anniversary of Nizhny Novgorod, the reconstruction of the pedestrian zone here is nearing completion
