In the Russian Empire, heirs to the throne received the Order of Saint Andrew the First-Called at birth, male members of the imperial family at baptism, and princes of the imperial blood on coming of age. Grand Duchesses received the Order of Saint Catherine, First Class, at baptism, and princesses of the imperial blood on reaching their majority.

The ribbon of the Order of Saint Andrew is blue, that of Saint Catherine red. This fact is sometimes mentioned in connection with the history of the stereotype that blue is a boys' colour and red (or pink) a girls' colour.
