**Richard Nixon and Emperor Hirohito, 26 September 1971, Anchorage.**
In the night of 26 September 1971, Emperor Hirohito of Japan made a brief stop in Anchorage on his way to other countries. At Elmendorf AFB he was met by President Richard Nixon and the First Lady. The meeting was official, with full military honours, but lasted very little time: it was a protocol stopover. Even so, the event entered the history books: for the first time a reigning Japanese emperor had set foot on American soil. The press devoted considerable attention to the episode, and footage of the greeting was shown in news bulletins.

**Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II, 2 May 1984, Fairbanks.**
At the start of a far-reaching tour of the Pacific countries, Pope John Paul II made a stop in Fairbanks. At the foot of the aircraft steps he was met by President Ronald Reagan.
