In early June 2013, on the 3rd if memory serves, this anonymous art object appeared outside the Samara Public Library. A section of masonry at the base of a column, with books in place of bricks.

The object appeared early on Monday morning, and photographs of it quickly spread across the internet. The library staff, arriving for work, soon covered the stack of books cemented into a hollow in the wall with a piece of cardboard. A little later the whole section was broken out and replaced with genuine brickwork.

The creator of the work of art has remained unknown, as far as I am aware.

There was much argument about this stack of books. Some wrote «sacrilege, how can one, they are books!», and there was talk of hooliganism too. But it is, on the whole, a very laconic and lucid statement. It does not seem to have been meant to offend anyone. True, one feels sorry for the books, but nobody weeps over the stacks of waste paper in the recycling depots, do they?
