There are now about thirty genuine ancient Egyptian obelisks standing in the world; Egypt has eight, as many as Rome. The tallest stands on the Lateran Hill before the Basilica of St John the Baptist. It is an obelisk from the temple of Amun-Ra at Karnak, raised in the 15th century BC and brought to Rome in 357 in the reign of Emperor Constantius II. It later fell and broke apart, and lay on the ground for several centuries until it was restored and raised again, but in a new place, in 1588\. The obelisk itself is 32.18 metres high, and with its base and cross the height is 45.7 metres
