At Melikhovo, which Chekhov bought in 1892, he, who had never had a house of his own, acquired for the first time a study of his own, of which he wrote: "I sit in my study with its three large Italian windows and live in blissful content." The original furnishings have survived in the study to this day: the writing desk, the armchair, the sofa, a sketch by Levitan and family photographs. Until the 1970s the desk stood in the Melikhovo school, one of the three schools founded with Chekhov's assistance and at his expense; he himself gave it to the school before leaving for Yalta. On the desk stands a photograph of his friend and admirer Pyotr Tchaikovsky with a dedicatory inscription. A chandelier by Fyodor Shekhtel hangs in the study, a gift from the architect's granddaughter, Marina Sergeyevna.
