In Lima, ahead of the presidential run-off, shamans gathered on Herradura beach and blessed portraits of both candidates, Fujimori and López Aliaga. The rite is repeated there every year and before every vote, and it is no exotica staged for the amusement of tourists but a living example of classical Andean religiosity. It is curious that the Peruvian curandero and his brother from the other end of the New World, somewhere in California, are remarkably alike in their anatomy. The same shaman as go-between of the worlds, the same work through altered consciousness, the same role of healer and interpreter. And the same archaeological trace: a considerable part of the rock art of both Americas, from the Great Murals of California to the petroglyphs of Peru, is today interpreted precisely as the recording of shamanic visions transferred onto stone. A single thread runs from Beringia to the Andes, and the Peruvian sorcerers on the beach are not a folkloric curiosity but the living continuation of what I am accustomed to analysing on the walls of Californian caves.
