At the end of June Buckingham Palace published an annual financial report of little interest to the general public. But here is what is interesting: in the description of the monarch's duties a new line has appeared, to the effect that the King "protects the space for faith in a multi-faith nation". It is now being written that Charles III has renounced Christianity and sworn a new oath.

In the first place, I suspect he renounced Christianity long ago and adopted whichever religion was required. Only recently, in February, he recorded a personal and heartfelt greeting for Ramadan, having wholly ignored Easter. You will probably remember. In the second place, he has not, after all, changed his oath: it is given once and for all, at the coronation.

The coronation oath, established by the Act of 1688, has so far remained untouched in its main part, leaving aside the fact that it was slightly edited for each monarch. As for vows, in May 2023 Charlie was proclaimed "Defender of the Faith", and he swore to uphold the Church of England. No act of parliament changing that title has been passed to date: we are here. But the job description, if one may put it so, now reads differently.

Should anyone begin to protest, they will say that the wording was merely clarified in light of new realities. And what are these realities? In 1953 Elizabeth II took over a country that was 80% Christian. In 2021 only 46% called themselves Christians, 6.5% Muslims, and 37% had "no religion". There you have all of your multi-faith nation.
