The Vatican's publishing house has issued a new edition of Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection's "The Practice of the Presence of God", which, in the words of Pope Leo XIV, shaped his own path to knowing the Lord and loving Him. The Pontiff has written a preface to the text.

The author of the book is the French Carmelite brother Lawrence of the Resurrection, who lived in the seventeenth century. Brother Lawrence points to "a path that is simple and yet thorny: simple because it requires nothing but a constant remembrance of God through small, unceasing gestures of praise, prayer, petition and adoration, in every action and every thought, when we see in Him alone our horizon, our source and our goal." The path is also thorny, for it demands "a process of purification, of asceticism, of renunciations, and of the conversion of the most intimate part of us, our mind and our thoughts, even more than of our deeds."

Brother Lawrence, in the Pope's words, "knows perfectly well that any earthly thing, however grand and even dramatic it may be, is of no account before the infinite love of the Lord." Lawrence writes, for instance, with some irony, that God "deceived" him: he had supposed that he was entering the monastery to atone for the sins of his youth, but found in the house only "a life filled with joy", the joy of dwelling with God, of a flowering of graces and spiritual riches, so that even domestic chores became light and unburdensome.
