In Catholicism, on the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, it is the custom to wear black vestments with special decoration. This particular liturgical occasion is accompanied by the symbolism of skeletons, the fires of purgatory, decay, transience and even coffins. Modern culture would call this aesthetic “gloomy”, which, however, has to do with the heightened sensitivity of our age to the theme of the fragility of existence, compensated by a desire to remove from sight the trappings of funeral ritual and the symbols of death. In essence, it is a very important reminder of such realities as the finitude of the earthly path, the inevitability of the end and the judgement after death
