V–A–C Press has published a translation of the monograph "The Russian Experiment in Art, 1863–1922" by the British scholar and researcher of the Russian avant-garde Camilla Gray. The book is one of the first Western studies of the Russian avant-garde and has become a classic of art-historical thought. First published in Great Britain in 1962, the monograph not only revealed the phenomenon of the Russian avant-garde to the Western reader but also acquainted Soviet art historians with a number of scarcely accessible materials.

The publication of the book in Olga Demidova's Russian translation is significant less for academic than for historical reasons. As the art historian and specialist in the Russian avant-garde Andrey Sarabyanov remarked in an interview with Artguide: "It is hard to call 'The Russian Experiment' an art-historical discovery: over sixty years the study of Russian art has indeed advanced a great deal. But now Camilla Gray's book acquires a different significance and is rather a historiographical rarity, a unique document of its time." Andrey Dmitrievich added that the inaccuracies in Camilla Gray's book matter little against the depth and structure of her research, which traces the origins of the Russian avant-garde and its connections with Symbolism and Art Nouveau.

Incidentally, Dmitry Vladimirovich Sarabyanov, Andrey Sarabyanov's father, also an art historian and specialist in the history of Russian art and of the avant-garde in particular, wrote the foreword to the first British edition of "The Russian Experiment" and assisted Camilla Gray in her work on the monograph.
