At the Institute of Art History on Kozitsky Lane, Gosha Ostretsov's exhibition "Utopia" has opened, a sort of itinerary through the artist's universe, with works from the 1990s to the 2020s. In the absence of a curatorial text, all that remains is to watch how Gosha has spent decades building his invented world, strange yet recognisable, combining science fiction, futurism, animation, decorativeness and his own manner of talking about what is going on in the world.

One of the central projects is the archival "New Government", devised by Ostretsov in 1999\. The dreadful mugs of fantastic rulers hide beneath eerie masks, either of villains from "Star Wars" or of otherworldly functionaries from "Dune". The artefacts of an imaginary system of power echo the motifs of painting of the 1920s, with springs, spare parts and boomerangs that seem to have dropped out of some dystopia: cheerful, but perhaps not very, if that world ended up falling apart into fanciful yet nonetheless disjointed contraptions.

A little of "Kin-dza-dza!", a little of his own mythology, the same flat manner and theatricality, and over the decades a picture takes shape that no longer seems to need separating from the present.

The exhibition is not quite in an ordinary exhibition hall, so it can be visited by appointment only; it runs until mid-September.
