German Police Uncover Ring of Forged-Masterpiece Dealers.

German police have announced the dismantling of an international gang that sold fake paintings for millions of dollars. The fraudsters passed off forgeries as works by Rembrandt, Pablo Picasso and Frida Kahlo.

According to the police, the alleged organiser is a 77-year-old resident of Bavaria, who had ten accomplices. He was detained after attempting to sell two "Picassos", including a portrait of Dora Maar. The authentic [canvas](https://theparnassian.com/v-parizhe-vystaviat-na-torgi-maloizvestnuiu-rabotu-pikasso/?ref=theparnassian.com) depicting Picasso's model and muse was sold in Paris last week for 32 million euros.

The chief suspect also tried to sell a copy of Rembrandt's "The Syndics" for 150 million dollars. According to the investigation, the canvas was probably painted in the 20th century and belonged to an 84-year-old Swiss woman, who is now also under scrutiny.

Among the other forgeries are works attributed to van Dyck, Rubens, Modigliani and Miró. Prices ranged from 460 thousand to 16 million dollars.
