In the Stock Greenhouse of the Tsitsin Main Botanical Garden, the decorative treatment of the doors has been touchingly preserved: panels of dried plants assembled by the Soviet artist Sofya Vasilyevna Matveyeva (1904-1986). Sofya Matveyeva worked in the Main Botanical Garden almost from its founding, under Nikolai Tsitsin himself, who rescued more than one family of the repressed and the "unreliable", deprived of any means of earning a living by the tacit ostracism of the authorities and sometimes by outright bans on employing the relatives of "enemies of the people". Among those fortunate people was Sofya Vasilyevna, wife of the architect and artist Erich Borchert, who had been exiled to Karlag for his German origins. A graduate of VKhUTEIN, she could draw again, and feed her family by it. Matveyeva worked at the Main Botanical Garden until her retirement: she drew flowers and was happy.
