A highly representative, almost textbook selection of artists who work with textiles in every conceivable form, as the exhibition's curator Nina Gomiashvili writes in her foreword, took as its point of departure Hans Christian Andersen's nettle coats of mail, but has grown into a museum-grade account of the place of the thread in the fabric of contemporary art.

The exhibition is built on the Ruarts Foundation's own collection; a number of works were created specially for "Threads", and the show is opened and closed by two classics of the genre, Sergei Parajanov and Timur Novikov.

And as the curator subtly observes, since the very word "textile" evokes both texture and text, the whole exhibition, as one makes one's way through it, imperceptibly turns into a fairy tale. A red thread runs through the architecture of the space as the warp of its symbolic structure.

Among the remarkable artists whose work won my own heart are Elena Samorodova and Sergei Sonin, Katya Isaeva, Ustina Yakovleva, Lana Morozova, Artem Lyapin and Polina Serafimova. I recommend a visit wholeheartedly.
