Lambeth Palace in London, for eight centuries the residence of the Archbishops of Canterbury, has been restored for the first time in 70 years. The £40 million reconstruction was devoted to the restoration and conservation of the building's historic elements.

The palace serves as the archbishop's private residence, as well as a venue for closed meetings with foreign rulers and the heads of other faiths, and for large gatherings of bishops of the Anglican Church from all over the world.

It is reported that archaeological finds were made in the course of the restoration project. Beneath the palace floor, human remains were discovered, which may date from the prehistoric period, or from the Roman or Saxon periods.

Among the other finds are a medieval cesspit, the palace's original walls and traces of Tudor-era tiled floors, which made it possible to reconstruct the layout of the inner courtyard.
