This year the Annunciation coincides with Holy Week and falls on one of the most demanding days of the Lenten liturgical year.
Such a coincidence is rare, but not unheard of. What is truly exceptional is another matter: when the Annunciation falls exactly on Easter Day, it is called Kyriopascha, literally "the Lord's Pascha". In the Greek tradition this event was regarded as a sign of a special order: the day of the Incarnation and the day of the Resurrection meet at a single point, alpha and omega in one moment. It last happened in 1991\. The next occurrence will be in 2075.

When the Annunciation falls in Holy Week, the typikon prescribes the joining of two services, and this liturgical collision demands particular art from the compilers of the order of service. The fast is not relaxed, and no fish is served, although in an ordinary year the Annunciation is one of the few exceptions when fish may be eaten even during the strictest fast.

In popular perception, the Annunciation in Holy Week was always regarded as a double burden and a double hope at once.
