Until 29 September the Hermitage is hosting the [exhibition](https://www.hermitagemuseum.org/wps/portal/hermitage/what-s-on/temp%5Fexh/2024/phenomenon/?lng=ru&ref=theparnassian.com) "The Archaeological Phenomenon. Between Past and Future". Today an [interview](https://dzen.ru/a/ZsQ%5Feyv05TxIGvhG?share%5Fto=link&ref=theparnassian.com) was published with the exhibition's chief curator, Natalia Sutyagina, Senior Researcher in the Hermitage's Department of the East. I decided to highlight the most interesting passages of the conversation.

The holdings of the State Hermitage include two archaeological collections containing items of very good preservation made of organic materials. These are the collections of finds from the Pazyryk and Noin-Ula burial mounds.

The exhibition draws chiefly on the Hermitage's Noin-Ula collection, found on the expedition led by P.K. Kozlov in 1924–1925, which has not previously been shown to the general public. Only a few individual pieces have appeared in Russian and international exhibitions.
Here one can see details of nomadic daily life that are almost ethnographic in their richness. For archaeology, this is an exceptional case.

The design of the exhibition, with large-format photographs of the excavations and, for the first time, the personal and working diaries of the excavation participants, allows one to immerse oneself in the 1920s, to find oneself at the bottom of an excavation pit (God forbid) or in a mountain valley, to walk alongside a caravan that may well be carrying in its bundles the very objects that now lie in the display cases
