In December 1893 Arthur Conan Doyle published "The Final Problem" in The Strand Magazine, bringing the cycle of stories about the noble detective to a close. At the end of the story Professor Moriarty kills Sherlock Holmes: the two of them fall together from a cliff at the Reichenbach Falls. Admirers were outraged by such a finale and showered the author with angry letters; it is even said that Queen Victoria wished Holmes to be left alive. For ten years Doyle withstood the pressure and bore the countless curses, and in the end he resurrected the legendary Holmes in 1903\. He gave in, but not at once
