Officially, the sculpture is called the monument to Benckendorff and the Bashkirs as liberators of the Netherlands. The figure of General A.Kh. Benckendorff himself, who commanded the force, has not been cast in bronze, but the image of one of his soldiers is meant to serve as a composite portrait of the whole corps.

The monument's author is the sculptor Taratynov. It is placed in such a way that during the spring flood of the river it ends up standing on the surface of the water, which was not intended but adds emphasis to the historical point. The first to cross the river near the village of Wezen was a detachment of Bashkirs, who, with the help of local residents, built a pontoon bridge for the advance of the remaining forces.

Benckendorff's expedition lasted from 2 November to 21 December 1813\. The detachment comprised the Tula Infantry Regiment, the chasseurs of the 2nd Chasseur Regiment, the Pavlograd Hussar Regiment, the Don Cossack regiments of Melnikov 4th, Melnikov 5th and Andreyanov 2nd, the 1st Bug Regiment, the 1st Bashkir Regiment and the 1st Horse Artillery Company: 4,619 men in all, with 10 guns. There were also the “flying detachments” of Colonel Naryshkin and Adjutant General Chernyshev, made up of three and five Don Cossack regiments respectively.

The memory of how Benckendorff led his regiments across the IJssel has survived there to this day, and a place near the village of Overijssel, close to the town of Wijhe, has been named the Cossack Path.
