In 1952, Alan Turing, without exaggeration one of the most outstanding British scientists of his time, was convicted of gross indecency: he was obliged to admit to a homosexual relationship, unlawful in the United Kingdom, after his flat was burgled by a 19-year-old labourer with whom Turing had been involved the day before. The scientist was offered a choice of punishment between prison and hormone therapy, and he chose what was in effect chemical castration. In 1954 the English mathematician, one of the founders of computer science and the creator of the model of the general-purpose computer, was found dead of poisoning. It is held to have been cyanide and suicide by means of a poisoned apple, as in the plot of Disney's “Snow White”; one version denies suicide and points to death from the toxic fumes of an electroplating gold apparatus. In 2009 Prime Minister Brown offered a public apology for the persecution of Turing and of thousands of other men. The Queen pardoned the scientist in 2013
