A remarkable discovery! One of the opening scenes of Sergei Parajanov's comedy "The First Lad" repeats, down to the last detail, Tatyana Yablonskaya's famous painting "Bread". The composition, the placing of the figures, the colour scheme, even the blue hem tucked up into the belt: all are the same. It is a most touching homage from a People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR to a People's Artist of the USSR. The film was made at the Dovzhenko Film Studio in 1958; "Bread" was painted in 1949, and in 1950 earned Yablonskaya the Stalin Prize, Second Class. In 1958, as it happens, the painting was awarded a bronze medal at the Brussels World's Fair. It is now in the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery.
