The historic sign of a colonial goods shop in Paris, at 14 rue Mouffetard. The white woman, incidentally, contrary to first impressions, is pouring a drink for the dark-skinned figure, and not the other way round.

In the 2010s the sign began to suffer at the hands of city vandals and of assorted well-funded public organisations, suitably furnished with grants, which demanded its removal. In the end, in 2017, it was decided to take the sign down, and in 2018 it was transferred to the Carnavalet city museum. The inscription Au Negre Joyeux, however, was nonetheless left untouched, since it forms an integral part of the protected historic façade, while the picturesque wooden panel was removed and is now displayed at the Carnavalet, in a room with other city shop signs.
