Saxo Grammaticus reports that after Harold's death at the Battle of Hastings, Gytha of Wessex fled to Flanders, then to her uncle, King Sweyn of Denmark, and a few years later married Vladimir Monomakh, Prince of Smolensk.

Gytha bore six sons: Mstislav the Great (Prince of Kyiv), Izyaslav (Prince of Kursk and Murom), Svyatoslav (Prince of Smolensk and Pereyaslavl), Roman (Prince of Volhynia), Yaropolk (Prince of Pereyaslavl and Prince of Kyiv) and Vyacheslav (Prince of Smolensk, Prince of Turov and Prince of Pereyaslavl-South). In the West the eldest son was called Harold, after his grandfather.

There is an opinion that Gytha took part in the First Crusade, died in 1098 and was buried in Palestine.
