For the Orthodox, Lent begins tomorrow, but in the Church of England this year 14 March already falls in the middle of Lent, traditionally observed as Mothering Sunday. Mothering Sunday has been identified with the fourth Sunday of Lent in England since the seventeenth century; before that, the maternal feast was kept on the third Sunday of March by decree of none other than the longest-reigning English king of the Middle Ages, Henry III, who thus perpetuated the memory of his mother, Isabella of Angoulême, who bore 14 children and was a great-great-granddaughter of Anna Yaroslavna. Apart from Mothering Sunday, Lent in England is, it must be said, barely noticeable nowadays. Only now and then is it linked with pronouncements by the Archbishop of Canterbury, asking the faithful to limit their use of electricity on fast days and to cut carbon dioxide emissions, or to keep the fast with lightness and cheer.
