Pogodin has a tale, told by Countess A.D.B., of a strange divination that took place in a landowner's house, in the company of friends E.O.

The young ladies fell to talking of divination by mirror, and the daughter of the house agreed to try it and to learn where the brother of one of those present might be. After a long silence before the candles and the mirror she began to speak: here is a mist, here a sandy bank and a great swift river, a multitude of people, a camp, soldiers, cannon, horses on both banks.

What a marvel, to see a great many soldiers when divining in wartime!

But there followed some most curious particulars. A boat put off from the far bank, carrying a general of small stature; in the middle of the river there was a raft. Another boat came to shore as well. One of the friends went up to the mirror and saw the very same thing. A second general stepped onto the raft and turned round. The girl cried out: the Sovereign!

This divination took place on 13 June, the day of the famous [Tilsit meeting](https://theparnassian.com/aleksandr-i-tseluetsia-s-napoleonom-na-plotu-posredi-nemana-vo-vremia-zakliucheniia-tilzitskogo-mira-v-iiune-1807-goda/?ref=theparnassian.com) of Emperor Alexander I and Napoleon.

Could country girls have known of that meeting? Yet Pogodin relates the story on the word of a countess known to him alone. And whether to believe it or not, as ever, is your affair.
