The English vet James Herriot, who became famous for his touching and instructive writings about livestock, farm life and the treatment of animals, has a story about a loathsome fat man who beat his wife. When the domestic tyrant happened to injure himself, and Herriot drove him to the doctor for a tetanus jab, the physician turned out to be the very same one to whom the injured man's wife had come with her bruises. The doctor resolved to teach the scoundrel a lesson and gave him a painful injection with a syringe fitted with a thick needle, so as to punish the man somehow without breaking faith with the Hippocratic oath.
