The very first dial dates from the time of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, who presented the Monastery of Saint Savva with a tower clock brought from Smolensk. Unfortunately, neither the clockwork nor the dial itself has survived to our own day. As pre-revolutionary sources relate, the French, running riot in the monastery in 1812, damaged and smashed the striking clock.
