The central panel of the altarpiece of the Basilica of San Zeno, Verona. Crucifixion, Andrea Mantegna, 1457-1459\. In the foreground we see the mottled, lifeless summit of Golgotha, somewhat like marble, or perhaps bone, as though it represented the top of a skull with its sutures and sparse blades of grass sticking out of them. The Virgin Mary has fainted and is supported by the holy women, who have symbolically crossed their hands upon her breast, as if sending a gesture to heaven; a similar gesture can be found in Bramantino's scenes of the Crucifixion. Among the many people on Golgotha, only one figure has turned his gaze towards Christ: the solitary Saint John. At his feet, soldiers are playing dice on a shield.
