Mikhail Nesterov's "Tsarevna" is a masterly embodiment of the Russian winter and a lament for a beloved wife. Nesterov painted this picture in memory of his late wife, giving his heroine the eyes and the expression of the woman he loved. That is why the tsarevna stands in a snow-covered cemetery. Yet a star burns on her brow, and in it we read a certain warm hope and even joy: it is believed that the artist endowed the picture both with the motifs of grief for his wife and with the signs of the miracle of his daughter's birth.
