An ominous sign? At Versailles, the Passemant perpetual clock has stopped. This famous astronomical clock, acquired by Louis XV on the recommendation of the French Academy of Sciences, is supposed to display dates up to the last day of the year 9999, but something has gone wrong.. The clockmakers of Versailles are of course already at work on the fault, though they say that the stoppage on 21 June is not the first failure since the clock was moved to the «Les Sciences à Versailles» exhibition. Still, to my mind, the stopping of the principal ultra-precise clock of France, by which the country's official time was once set, on precisely 21 June 2021 is a very delicate coincidence, for on 21 June 1791, 230 years ago, the royal family was arrested after its flight to Varennes
