The Church of St John the Baptist in Tolchkovo is one of the most beautiful in the country and is recognised as one of the chief masterpieces of the Yaroslavl school of architecture.

Richly adorned with glazed tiles and moulded brick, the Church of St John the Baptist was built in 1671–1687 at the expense of the Yeremin family, owners of tanneries, and with donations from local residents. It is the only fifteen-domed church in the country.

Despite heavy losses of frescoes in the second half of the twentieth century, recent restoration work still allows one to appreciate the splendour of the wall paintings, executed in 1694–1695 by Yaroslavl artists. The church has a delightful carved iconostasis, which, alas, was plundered in the revolutionary years.
