The compulsory shaving of beards, confirmed by a decree of 1698, did not apply to men who paid, depending on their estate, from 30 to 600 roubles a year. The fact of payment was certified by the issue of a token bearing a beard and the inscription "The money has been taken"; the reverse of the coin gave the year of issue, that is, the year in which the payment was taken.
