Thomas Eliot and Virginia Woolf were friends for over twenty years, but when Eliot embraced Christianity, or rather, after a period of open hostility to the Church, gradually became a zealous believer, Woolf said: he is dead to all of us. She called his faith in God and the immortality of the soul obscene, disgraceful, shameful. Perhaps she was simply envious that the more gifted man might, in the final reckoning, prove to be the more right one on questions of eschatology as well?

At any rate, Eliot was driven by his own feeling, with no wish to humiliate or shame anyone, still less any concern for the fashionable opinion of a clique of English anti-religious intellectuals.

And despite the near hatred in the venomous remarks of his “friend” against him, Eliot showed composure and maturity of spirit, and remained a truly good friend to her.
