In the last two years alone, 40 cases of vandalism at the Colosseum have been recorded in Rome. And now, at last, the city authorities have updated the legislation governing public order in the capital, which has stood since 1946.

The new rules cover both the assistance rendered by police officers and the fight against vandalism and improper behaviour. Fines for various misdemeanours range from 160 to 450 euros, for instance for bathing in historic fountains or clambering on the structures of the fountains themselves. If paid immediately, the fines will be considerably smaller. 400 euros for damaging historic sites, monuments or churches. 160 to 400 euros for selling and consuming alcohol in the street. In addition, a temporary ban is in force on offenders returning to the area where the offence was committed, from 48 hours to 60 days.

The mayor believes that the amendments to the city-protection laws will guarantee the complete safety of the treasures and good order of the Eternal City.
