This is what Paris looked like in 1900\. Beside the Eiffel Tower stands another symbol of the Exposition Universelle in Paris, though one built 11 years later. The round blue-and-gold building with stars is called the Globe Céleste and is, in effect, a very large globe, more than 45 metres in diameter, with its summit 60 metres above the ground.

Inside the globe were instructive and entertaining pavilions on several levels, a conservatory, a bar/restaurant, a café, changing panoramas, staircases and lifts, and a terrace at the top. The principal theme of the attractions within matched the appearance of the building: outer space, and everything was arranged so that visitors might feel themselves travellers through the cosmos.

Unfortunately the building was demolished, as were many of the pavilion structures of world's fairs, as redundant outside exhibition time and troublesome to maintain, a difficulty that showed itself most vividly after the deaths of nine people when the footbridge leading to the globe collapsed.
