A strange thing! Upon every Englishman, to whatever circle he may belong, unless he has lived in Europe, and lived there long, there lies a peculiar, distinguishing stamp. The Englishman is awkward, unwieldy, clumsy; there is something dreadfully wooden about him, and in this woodenness, this outward lack of animation, **the sons of Albion so resemble one another that one would think they were made not by the Lord God but by some manufacturer whom Parliament had contracted to turn them out in pairs, so many dozen a day, for the population of the island**. Rivarol observed long ago that the English have, as it were, two left hands; they are the same to this day: grace and freedom of movement remain for them an unsolved mystery.
