# Old Charles is not the first Charles III in English history

Old Charles is not the first Charles III in English history. Under that name, in 1766-1788, there was known the Jacobite claimant to the English and Scottish thrones, the penultimate representative of the House of Stuart, Bonnie Prince Charlie. But the earlier Charles III had a rather joyless and unlucky fate, full of disappointments and unfulfilled expectations. Having fled Britain, he wandered about Europe in the hope of restoring his rights to the throne and ousting the Hanoverians, who had come to reign thanks to the act barring Catholic monarchs from the English throne, but he grew old and died with nothing to show for it
