Among the famous forebears of Boris Johnson is Ali Kemal Bey, a Turkish opposition politician of the early twentieth century, journalist and public figure, who for a brief time in 1919 even held a ministerial post in the post-war Ottoman government. As minister, he signed the order for the arrest of Kemal Atatürk. The foundation of his legacy is his political opposition to the Armenian genocide. After Atatürk came to power, Ali Kemal was arrested on a charge of treason and lynched by a mob before he could be delivered to his place of confinement. Kemal's children by his first marriage to the Englishwoman Winifred Brun, a son and a daughter, lived in England and took their grandmother's surname, Johnson. The son, Osman Kemal, who became Wilfred Johnson, is the grandfather of Boris Johnson
