Amid the protected Scottish forests and heather moors of the Cairngorms rises a veritable stone pyramid, 10.6 metres high. The pyramid stands a few miles from the royal castle of Balmoral. No, the English did not steal it from Egypt. The structure was raised at the wish of Queen Victoria in memory of her husband, Prince Albert, after his death in 1861.

Strange as it may seem, this is not the only pyramid on the Balmoral estate. True, the others are far more modest and look like mere pyramidal heaps of stones. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert set up these memorials, cairns, on their lands to mark various occasions: the building of the new castle, the purchase of a new estate, the weddings of their children. One of the cairns is in memory of Queen Victoria's mother. In all there are 16 of them at Balmoral, of which 11 are connected with Queen Victoria.
