Wondering what was so mysteriously Victorian going on in Peredelkino yesterday? Conversations in hammocks, prose readings in garden pavilions, impassioned speeches by gentlemen beneath century-old pines, photographs taken with an antique mirror camera… Let me tell you. Bookmate and the Peredelkino Writers' House presented the first translation of Henry James's novel *The Other House*. And the presentation was held in the authentic atmosphere of old England, with the clouds gathered, it seemed, to order.

The book by Henry James, one of the great American writers not yet translated into Russian, came out in March in the “Bookmate Translations” series, a joint project of Yandex Plus's book service and the publishing house Podpisnye Izdaniya. The five translators lived in Peredelkino, working under the direction of Alexander Glazyrin in the Writers' House translation workshop.

The plot of the novel is at once dramatic and criminal, and the action unfolds between two aristocratic estates in old England in the days of Queen Victoria. Hence the gloomy, mysterious aesthetic of the programme.

It was on this occasion that “Another Age” took place yesterday on the grounds of the Writers' House: a public discussion of Victorian literature and the work of Henry James, a lecture by Maria Sokolova on the English country estate, an immersive walk through the Peredelkino park in the setting of England in the second half of the nineteenth century, and sketches by the Brusnikin students. Towards evening, guests were treated to a concert-reading of *The Other House* performed by actors of the Brusnikin Workshop.
