I deliberately do not write "the tomb of da Vinci", because his real grave was lost during the Huguenot wars. The record of the death of Leonardo, aged 67, survives in the register of the church of Saint-Florentin in Amboise.

Near Amboise, in the Château du Clos Lucé, he spent the last years of his life, supposedly at the invitation of King Francis I.

Visitors to the artist noted his senile frailty, and the famous portrait likewise made him look ancient beyond his years. His ill health in later life, however, did not affect his work, and the drawings of this period are distinguished by carefully worked compositions and a multitude of thoughtfully devised fantastic creatures.

They say that the King of France himself sat grieving at the deathbed of the Milanese nobleman. Who knows whether his grave would have survived had he been less favoured by the powers that be.
