I hear on the Kultura news that vandals have defiled the façade of the Museum of Contemporary Russian History. I think: well, blimey! I watch the report, and what they show is a tiny bit of graffiti beside a mascaron of a disgruntled lion. Good heavens, what a desecration! The museum's director, Irina Velikanova, speaks up and mournfully announces that both the railings and the walls of the museum have suffered from vandalism not for the first time. She says it was apparently done by teenagers. Have you really run out of news stories altogether? Put on an exhibition, tell us about the discovery of a bottle of camel's milk from 1910 in the attic of an old house. The correspondent describes in a dramatic tone how three malefactors, under cover of night, committed this crime, dreadful to the point of madness. And above all! Above all, the damage has already been calculated: restoring this fragment of the building's decoration will cost 126 thousand roubles. Listen, shall I simply paint over this thingamajig for you myself? And then they even had the wit to remind people that such vandalism is punishable by law with a fine or deprivation of liberty. But when whole mansions are pulled down to make way for luxury housing, that's quite all right
