What should have happened four months ago, after the robbery of the Louvre, has now come to pass: its director Laurence des Cars has resigned, and the President of France has accepted her resignation. And he promptly sent her off to work on cooperation between major museums as part of the French presidency of the G7, in a post that simply had not existed before.

I write about the departure of the odious Laurence des Cars from the Louvre for the website [RBC Style](https://style.rbc.ru/impressions/69a805c09a7947624858a6d3?ref=theparnassian.com).

The same, incidentally, happened to the previous head of the Louvre, Jean-Luc Martinez. For him they invented something like the post of ambassador for international cooperation. This is done to keep up appearances. Martinez, by the way, was the man who launched the strategic project to modernise the Louvre's security system; work to strengthen the museum's protection was due to begin as early as 2021, when des Cars took over the museum, but it never happened.

Des Cars and Martinez are not the first directors to have displeased the public, the professional community and the media. The head of the Centre Pompidou, Alain Seban, the director of the Musée Picasso, Anne Baldassari, and the head of the Musée d'Orsay, Guy Cogeval, were at various times accused of authoritarianism, verbal rudeness, cruelty towards staff and excessive control. Even such sins as demanding that the chauffeur bring personal belongings, and that the secretary walk the dog, were mentioned. In short, a whole system of royal honours.

So des Cars, detached from reality, hiding behind presentation files, disdainful and discourteous, evasive of direct questions and unsmiling, clannish and autocratic, as it all suddenly turned out, is neither the first nor the last director in the role of the dim-witted magnate from the film «Игрушка» \[The Toy\]. But this is not so much a matter of the personal qualities of this or that professional as of strategies that have developed within the culture and, I believe, are characteristic of the whole world.
