Adjutant General Alexander Ivanovich Rumyantsev describes in a private letter to Peter I an amusing incident that befell him in Sweden in August 1720, when Peter sent him at the head of an embassy to the new Swedish king, Frederick I.

When the galley bearing Rumyantsev appeared near the Swedish shore, the Swedish fleet was terrified and thrown into utter commotion. Of this Golitsyn writes as follows:

> "When I arrived, there was no one there but the sentries, yet on this very day they have sent out so many skerry boats and frigates along the way that on the fairway, every verst, there is not one but several stationed, and a great alarm has been raised by a single post galley, and patrols ride about by night looking whether our people are not in readiness, all from one galley. ... This my humble note I write to Your Majesty for curiosity and for laughter, and I have handed it to an officer in advance, since once I have met the admiral it will no longer be possible to write of this openly..."
